I haven't been as on it with updates and I apologize but polo is still going strong here in Honolulu. Jorge is still recovering from his accident. We are still putting together a bike for him so any and all help you can donate to the project is appreciated. In the mean time I do like these two photos that were taken recently. The Broken Coconut tourney went down well. It started a lil late but once it was under way it was unstoppable. The games got more intense as the day progressed. Congrats to team Tupperware for winning the tourney. One of greatest things I can say about playing polo in paradise isnt that we have some great sceneary with the ocean side courts and lush green mountains. No its the chill level headed people we meet and get the chance to share time with on and off the polo court. One of my favorite most chilled out dudes is Jorgie the Milkman and it pains me to say in the weeks following the Broken Coconut tourney, which Jorge played his heart out in and jumped ten polo bikes in a single bound while sober, Jorge suffered some trauma when he was struck by a truck riding home from polo. I wont go into any more detail about it but I couldnt not let the world know in some manner. I know his commuter was stolen a while back and now his polo steed is twisted up in an evidence closet somwhere. If any and all are willing you can contact me or any other HNL polo head and we are starting a fund to get Jorge back on a bike by the time he bounces back from the string of shitty luck he has had these past few months. Jorge we love you and hope to see you back on the polo courts soon hombre.

Broken Coconut Tournament

Here it is the flyer for the tourney. The rules for even will be followed as listed in the rule section of this blog. If you have any questions or a team let me know and Ill add it to the roster. This event will take place on August 14 2011 at Hawaii Kai Hockey Rink. It will be bracket style tournament. Plan for teams to check in at 8:30 day of the event and we can launch once all have checked in. I will add more sponsors as they come in. Need more info or housing for out of towners email me.

Randoms: Polo mayhem

I haven't updated in a while and I apologize but I wrecked my ankle last night at polo and can't even stand on it so here I am at the computer sitting. I wasn't able to attend aloha sunday this past weekend where a 5 team round robin style mini tourney took place. I was however able to attend last weds where I bent my fork, which Jai replaced with his own handbuilt beefy fork. I swear to god the fork weighs five punds but my janky bike has never felt sturdier. We have had a couple of the H-bomb gravity bike guys come out. Jordan came out a couple weeks ago and played polo until my polo fork gave out then he and I hit round top on mini bikes. All in all polo is continuing to grow and thrive and intermingle with people from all aspects of the cycling community in Honolulu.

Matt Ching aka Pedal Piff conjured this idea up a while back and told me about it. Im stoked its here finally. I think the status is obvious...while on a bike dodge the ball or hit another person with the ball. Same rules as dodge ball but on bikes kids. Come out this Weds it'll go down at 5pm at Makiki park and continue in between polo pickups till no ne is left riding a bike. Eilif spent his vacation nights doodling up this dope poster for the event. Come check it out it'll be a great time.

Farewell: to Rob

This Sunday (3/27) will be Robs last day out here. He will be on a plane during normal polo hours for Sundays so we are bumping this Sundays start time to 2pm. As always it will be at Makiki. Hope every one can make it. Rob will be missed on the polo courts out here for sure as he is always full of positive vibes, smiles, laughter, and broken chainrings. As off late due to terrible weather we have indeed been turning our spot on the courts into a chanti town esque establishment. Tarps draped over a single bench with the watering hole placed next to it and bbq grills come into the picture as we get hungry. Here is a flick taken of said moments. I arrive home today after a long days work, tired from lack of sleep due to last nights wind storm. I go to the fridge and reach for a cold pint of "Japans oldest beer" I say "Wassup?" to the mutt and take a sat. On the counter I see in the stack of bills an issue of Honolulu Magazine. HNL Bike polo has not had very much media attention and we are all pretty stoked that we got some publicity via Honolulu's most widely read magazine. I personally enjoyed the article it touches on polo history of the world for a second and then brings it back to our growing thriving scene in Honolulu. In the one page layout you'll find two of our (insert an adjective of your own that accurately depicts these scoundrels) Mowgli and Josh as they battle for control. Quickie: Clark VS Josh

Between classes today I was working on some video editing for another project when I came across a clip from this weekend. I was becoming bored with the project I was working on due to lack of material so I decided to take a 5 minute break and put this quickie together instead. A funny note about the song choice is that I'm pretty sure this is infact how Clark got his scratch on his nose that day. This past Weds polo went all night long, I bailed at 10pm and games continued on. Everybody has been becoming more dedicated to showing up and playing more polo. Various people who haven't shown face for a while are coming back out of the wood work which is nice. Im stoked on having polo offically being set twice a week. THe video doesn't glitch on my computer but it does via vimeo for some reason. I really wish we caught this crash better.

It's Your Birthday Clark!

This past weekend involved one of our best polo celebrations yet. We helped celebrate Clarks birthday with some beer, cake, a pinata, and of course polo. Everybody had a great time as far as I could tell, but was I really a good judge of the matter? Possibly not. This past week I have missed the entire poloverse. While I was unable to show up to polo pickups both this past Sunday and last night (Weds) it was not in vain. I was visiting my nephew and making up missed school work due to a fuck up in my flight back home. While I spent hours in a laboratory last night knowing polo was going down on the court I couldnt help but catch my mind drifting from lab work to thoughts of polo. As the night drug on Eilif texted me to remind me of how detrimental school can sometimes be to my polo. As I arrived home last night just shy of 9p.m. I am ready for the the cold refreshing beer that is bountiful in the fridge. My girl points to the table. I see a rather large black envelope sitting on the table. After opening it my polo sadness for the evening weened away. The first issue of DAB is now in my posession. DAB is the first magazine in the U.S. if not the world souly dedicated to hardcourt bike polo. It hails from the streets of N.Y. where they have the pit, Bench Minor, and some of the toughest player out there. It is compiled from contributions from all over the U.S. In this issue we see from N.Y. to MKE to SF. I have 5 issues total in my possesion. You know how to get a hold of me if you want to pick one of em up with a HNL Polo sticker for the price of $5.50 each let me know.

I haven't updated in a while, Ive been sick and over taken by this semester. We have been having a good amount of success holding polo twice a week lately. The day that seems to work the best is Weds. We have been playing at our usual spot at 6pm for three weeks now and the turn out while it started meek has turned into nothing short of our usual Sunday crowd. Hopefully we can keep this twice a week going. Id share pictures with you but our cameras have been set to video lately and it's all going towards a seperate project but while appear on the blog when the time comes.

Rainy Winter Days and Weds Polo!

We have had some rainy weather this past week. It's our Hawaiian snow i guess and we can still play polo so not all is bad. Micheal shot some footage with his I phone which I hastley put together this week. We all hope Ariel is doing better, he was involved in a non-polo related eye injury this past weekend. We all hope to see him back on the polo court soon.
This is also short notice for the blog but we are playing polo tomorrow at Makiki our normal spot at 6pm. If you can make it show up for some polo. I got to most of the regulars through text but for those I dont have numbers for due to phone damage at polo a few weeks ago I hope you got the message for tomorrow through the grape vine.
In the mean time here is the quickie of rainy Hawaiian winter polo I put together. Lots of dropped mallets due to the wet grips and lack of aggression due to beer and rain I suppose...not to mention we had been playing for a few hours by this point...enjoy!

Polo on a Tuesday!

A bunch of us have been pushing now to try and solidify a weekday to play polo on. While we strived for Weds. they never seemed to come together. A bunch of us kicked around the idea of playing on Tuesday night this week and while there was a decent amount of people who said they could make it the numbers of those who actually showed were small. Enough showed up for 2v2 and we didn't let that deter our evening of polo. Nor did we let me fucking up lengthening of my chain. It took Clark, Josh, and I way to long to piece my chain back together in the dark. Cyrus you would have dis owned all of us, especially Clark, if you were there. Here are the few flicks I did manageto take.

Polo Derby

So this week has been a rough one for polo. This month rather. We are running through mallet heads, shafts, forks, chainrings, and rims. The damaged goods are stacking tall these days. Fucking Danny was in for a couple and promptly off back to Cali after some beer, whiskey, and polo. It was good to have him back even if only for an hour or two. I didnt get to many flicks this week as there was another photogrpaher on the court. But here is a couple of broken pieces from my own collection.

This past Sunday was a blast. It was great playing in the pouring rain for a game or two. No pictures of rainy games cause I wasn't trying to kill my camera. Cyrus showed up with the uni-cycle again which always makes for interesting polo matches, pretty uneven, but interesting. Ariel brought his new Eighth Inch mallet and it didnt last past the first joust. Eighth inch is rumoring a new sturdier compound being used for heads but I think the heads are heavy to begin with and because of that the shafts are made light and thin to make up for it. A stronger compound that weighed less would be better and up the thickness and sturdiness of the shaft. Thats just me.

This past Sunday was a great way to start of the New Year. Lots of old slackers and new faces showed up to start the new year with some polo. Rob tacoed a chainring riding into the court not even playing. Visiting Eilif came to represent for Corvallis playing with no chain at points in the day. Nates been coming more frequently and playing with an aerospoke like only a mad man would.

Boxing Day

Boxing day was Dec. 26th and James and homie Rob were nice enough to put on an allecay named after the day . Props to Johnny O for overall first place for the race. It was well planned for polo in terms of day and time. The alleycat brought a bunch of new faces to watch and play. I think everyone had a great time. I enjoyed the race but did kill the polo steed. Genghis Kahn Mallet Head

This thing is huge. The caps at the end were a quick fix to the problem I'm sure. Needless to say the end caps didn't hold up the best. I do however really like the recycled bike tube grip on the shaft. The head is huge and wouldn't be allowed in a tourney (but lets face it we aren't there yet so who cares) and it probably weighs more then Id like. This this looks like something Genghis Kahn himself would show up to a polo match with.

Uni-Polo

So we were short this week and need to build our numbers back up guys. Lets get a good strong turnout this coming week. Cyrus's polo bike got locked up by building maintance at the Kickstand so he showed up on his unicycle, yea he actually played polo on the unicycle. It was fun to attempt to ride in between games. Take note at the pictures Spencer showed up after he has been MIA, rumor has it Nate should be back out soon. For this week lets get back to straight polo and no shananigans. Needless to say I personally was disappointed not many showed up with costumes. Kudos to big Mark for your festive spirit and grimace mask and half ass kudos to Clark for your half ass seamen outfit. So I finally made it back out to polo this past weekend. School has been killing me. Anywho Clark called me out on not updating and I think its because he likes the polo blog to be updated with stuff about him...so here you go Clark...

Clark brought out his whip all modded out for polo. Its some crazy gearing like 24/22. His bike was fast and manueverable. Here he is showing it off...

it was short lived...between problems with lockrings and taking hits his bike did not hold up for the day, but his chainring did get the 21 gun salute with toy rifles...

What you missed on Labor Day Weekend.

There were shananagins and polo going down this past Sunday. Mowgli and Clark shuffled around the court doing leg overs, Ryan managed a "Lyan Tammer" on his cigarette, a Single Mickeys Ice was shared amongst way to many of us, oh and of course polo went down. In fact we seem to be growing. We damn near outnumbered the micronesian family(ies) that play volleyball on Sundays. While not everyone who shows up plays yet we will get them to one day.

So we are making roots strong here. Polo is now on Weds at 5pm at makiki. I for one will say that I have already changed the "WHEN" page. I personally wish I could show but unfortunately school load is heavy this semester. This isnt to say I wont play on Weds but definately wont make it out every Weds. I hope everyone shows up and we continue to progress the foot print polo has in the cycling community of Hawaii. In the mean time Clark revamped his polo bike not only with the new front rim after last week. He also put a skull on the head tube fender status. Oh and by the request of Clark here is his crotch shot...yea Clark while your sarcasim was noted I still let the crotch shot happen...No Homo!

Broken Spokes

Its been a while I know. I have a bunch of projects going on right now. I assure you that some do include Polo. This past week Clark showed up with his "new" trusted steed...or rusted steed... It's nice to see other people building up polo specific rides. As I sit on the sidelines beer in hand and I watch the games go down It almost hurts me to see some of the bikes on the court get abused the way they do, although on the other hand Im taken back by the fact that dudes are willing to put their bikes on the line for a game of polo. Anywho Clarks rusty spokes didnt hold up for long. Dont worry Clark Ill make a McDonalds run get you a super sized wheel cover.

This was brought to my attention this past Sunday. I like the fact that this article was written by a person who has absolutely no idea what bike polo is about or entails, not to mention a failed interpretation of a flyer for an American Holiday BBQ, as well as another article by a first timer who has gained more understanding from being on the court then looking at a website for five minutes. While you read the articles realize that one compares our bikes to noble steeds(probably not mine if he'd actually seen it), and the other says we earned good grades...While the later may be true for some of you it most certainly is not for me. Other then that yea we are a bunch of geeks on bikes with capes and who ever rips my cape first ill tell my dragon Kila to eat you...ask Rob she bit him. Anywho here is the articles link

1/8 inch mallet at 4th BBQ

Not that my opinion should influence anyone elses but I got to mess round with Mark's 1/8inch mallets and thought i'd write up on it. I like that they are capped, and I understand you can remove them, but I noticed with ends capped I saw less BJing. Although the groove in the center allows for some minor bj ability it does not allow players to shoot of a BJ which is good. It's actually against most leagues rules to shoot of a BJ (in fact most say if you BJ you must pass before a shot is taken) so in that sense I like them. They were built sturdy to those MKE shafts that Mark likes. When you strike the ball and the mallet head drags it has a clean hitting surface for better control of where the ball goes. I noticed the more the head on my mallet shaves the harder it is to control the ball in terms of shots due to the warpping of the small end. How ever at the end of the day 35+ shipping is steep for a mallet.

Inspired by nighttime professional games at the old Honolulu Stadium in the 1950s, we adapted fat-tired Schwinns and Columbias to the purpose. We wore no spandex shorts. We played barefoot in the street without helmets. I have the scars to prove it.

Back To the Drawing Board

This weekend turned into more of a discussion of how to continue gaining interest in polo and getting people to come out. I have always had the bet luck with fliers so I am resorting back to that, so there will be fliers claiming weekly games in a bunch of the bike shops in town. Continue to recruit riders any of you see out and about. I can even get fliers into your hands to hand out as well so we can reach a larger community of riders. We all seem to ride with different crowds during the week and what not, so if you want a small grip of fliers to hand out let me know and I will get em to you.

A few flicks from yesterdays meet up. It was a come and go day. People showed up played their few rounds and left while more showed up. It kept for a good games and new players every so many games. John came at the camera with a nice goal. Sau jousted on my bike and then told me all the janky things about my bike...including the seat. Mark showed up with a "melt your face" orange MKE shaft that he scooped from Bens Cycles. It hasnt been cut so it is a little long for my liking but it was definately a strong sturdy feeling mallet.

So Aloha Sunday went down this past Sunday and It was bike fun as usual. Here are some photos that highlight the day of polo. Once again more new faces showed up and played hard for their first time. I hope to see them and more new faces continue to show up. Since prizes have been consistantly been handed out to the polo players at Aloha Fixed's Aloha Sunday their will be a move for greater organization to the polo aspect of that. So expect a little more orginization to the polo matches at May's AS event. With that in mind those who have begun to love and play hard on the polo courts see you this Sunday for more pickup games!

In order to help with the mallet situation I have just recieved 5 more ski poles from Philly. It took them a while to get here but they made it. Ill be stopping by the Kickstand today at some point and possibly using their drill to build these mallets up as my drill died on me making my last batch of mallets...however Ive also had the idea of holding off on making this batch and letting people who want to build their own do so. I will discuss with Cyrus at the Kickstand to see if I can do so at his shop with interseted parties...Kind of like a mallet making party with beer of course. Lots of beer.

And while its been a short time I feel like polo is on the pick up and I am getting good enthusiasm from people. The make shift field worked out well for the event. I should still have a batch of ski poles on my doorstep hopefully this week since they didnt come last week. Aloha Sunday

So Aloha Sunday went down as a success yester day thanks to the efforts of Sau and Grant. It was an Aloha Fixed event that HNL bike polo came out to for pick up games. Sau surprised us with prizes so if the figureing out how they were won and distributed seemed odd its because we werent prepared for anything more then pick up games. Thanks to all those who participated and made the day a success for bike polo. The make shift tournament esque day made things a bit more interesting. Flick will be posted up some time this week.

So the deal is I got the ball, cones for goals, and should have enough various types of mallets to play 3v3 games. If you have your own or extra mallets bring em. For those who havent played before I will go over rules and how to play at the court...but for those who want to know what their getting into here are the basics

The Basics Rules:
1)3v3 - teams chosen at random by who shows up
2)If you dab (foot down) you touch out at defending goal before re-entering play.
3)The ball can be moved with any part of the mallet but goals will only count if ball is shot with the small hollow face of the mallet.
4) Play like contact (mallet to mallet, bike to bike, person to person) with no intent to physically harm an individual...

So thats the deal I will try to get more mallets made before Sunday and post flicks later this week of prototype mallets I have.

Riding in Circle Polo Frame

Italian bike company Riding in Circle has come up with a polo frame. The frame is set up for 26" wheels for quicker manuvers and more stability. As usual I dont know how you would go about getting one other then through the manufacturer website. Frame looks nice and sturdy with the recklessness of bike polo in mind. I dont speak Italian but I believe the fork is set for U-brakes as well.

Island Unstoppable 2010

Stacks of bikes is exaclty what we all wanted to see for this event...

The finishers that made it in time for the group photo (minus those who went straight to the bar for beer o'clock)...

Alohafixed family came together and organizd a century ride that took place this past weekend. Some where in the range of 30 cyclist showed up majority of which rode fixed. I believe the total mileage was about 108mi. It started at 730am and first finishers came in at about 530pm I beieve. Although I was not able to make the full ride I joined up at the end and had a blast. Hopefully another distance ride is in the near future. Of course I give props to all who participated and especially to the 14 or so that completed the enitre ride.

Some residual blood splatter that didnt get cleaned after I played a game of chicken with the fence week before christmas...mallet has some blood too but got rubbed off while play, I still have blood stains on the back rim too but camera died to quick.

So I am trying to make bike polo in HNL a weekly occurence. I will post info relevant to weekly games here. Leave comments or email me to let me know your thoughts on the times and places posted. I will take all info sent to me and post with in 24 hours of the actual event so we all know the final spot and time based off of feedback from any and all who want to play. For those who dont have mallets let me know I got a stash I have made up and will continue to make more as we need them.
In the mean time I got my polo bike set up now that the Milwaukee Polo Gaurd came in. And some of the NY Bike Polo guys sent out some supplies to help us get started in Honolulu.

Picked up these polo guards from Ben's with XD arms. Strong set up.
